Frequently Asked Questions

Processing times vary depending on the immigration category and the workload of the authorities. In general, a residency application can take between 3 and 12 months from submission to final resolution. During this period, a provisional document is issued that allows the applicant to remain legally in the country. Our team works to expedite the process and keep you informed at each stage.
In general, it is not allowed to work while your residency is in process, unless you obtain a specific work permit. However, there are exceptions for certain categories such as investors who manage their own businesses or corporate transfers with special permits. Our team can advise you on the options available according to your particular situation and, if necessary, manage the corresponding permits.
Documents issued abroad generally require apostille (for countries that are members of the Hague Convention) or consular legalization (for non-member countries). Commonly required documents include: birth certificate, marriage certificate (if applicable), criminal record certificate from the country of origin and/or residence for the last 3 years, and specific documentation according to the immigration category (pension certificates, investment proof, etc.). All documents in a language other than Spanish must be translated by an official translator in Costa Rica.
Costa Rican nationality can be obtained through residency, marriage, or birth. By residency, it is required to have maintained legal residency for at least 7 years (5 years for nationals of Central American countries, Spaniards, and Latin Americans). By marriage to a Costa Rican, the period is reduced to 2 years of marriage and residency. In both cases, it is required to pass an exam on Costa Rican history, geography, and civic values, as well as demonstrate means of living and good behavior. Our team can guide you through the entire naturalization process, including preparation for the exam.
